Kitchen Connection - Launch of the Cookbook in Support of the United Nations: For People and Planet at the UN Climate Conference, COP 27
The Cookbook in Support of the United Nations: For People and Planet will be launching at COP 27 through a collaborative event with support from the UNFCCC, the Government of Egypt, the Mission of Switzerland to the UN, and the Mission of Austria to the UN.
NEW YORK, NY -- In collaboration with the United Nations Department of Global Communications and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Kitchen Connection spearheaded the development of a landmark cookbook, The Cookbook in Support of the United Nations: For People and Planet which features sustainable, authentic recipes from 75 global contributors including farmers, food systems thought leaders, and professional chefs. Its chapters illuminate the fragilities of global and local food systems, and call on readers to use food and culture as a vehicle to drive systems-level transformation. The cookbook features an introduction by restauranter, activist, and entrepreneur Kimbal Musk and 75 recipes from chefs, indigenous peoples, and farmers, including chefs José Andrés, Daniel Boulud, Massimo Bottura (UN Environment Programme Goodwill Ambassador), Grace Ramirez, Andrew Zimmern and 70 contributors from indigenous communities and farms around the world who have signed on to improving the world’s food system. The cookbook features carbon calculations and its recipes have 58.6% less carbon compared to an average meal from high-emitting regions of the world.
The Alliance is working with the same Publisher that worked on the Cookbook to create a book for children that speaks to human and planetary health through the lens of sustainable eating, sustainable forest management, and a respect for the planet in and outside of the home. Kitchen Connection will be sharing a preview of this book at the UN Climate Conference.
The Alliance has been working with Chef José Andrés’ team who is featured in the Cookbook to produce a Netflix-pitched series that brings the Cookbook to life with an exploration of indigenous communities and remote areas under the threat of climate change. This is a wonderful opportunity to reach a wide audience of global citizens to propel them to action towards better environmental practices. Kitchen Connection will be showing a preview and showcasing this video, prepared by Chef José Andrés, here.
At the request of the organizers of the UN Climate Conference, COP 27, and the hosting Government of Egypt, world-renowned Chef Manal Al Alem will be present at the Conference on November 16th at 12PM, at the Food Systems Pavilion for a discussion, book signing, and culinary demonstration of her Bulgur and Spinach with Yogurt and Pomegranate recipe in the Cookbook in Support of the United Nations: For People and Planet.Manal Al Alem will be joined by Earlene Cruz from Kitchen Connection, Ms. Sara Farley from the Rockefeller Foundation, Laura Lopez from the UNFCCC, Laura Quiñones from UN News, Dr. Gunhild Stordalen from the EAT Foundation, and introduced by Dr. Reem Abdel Meguid from the Egyptian Government. This collaboration is supported by the UNFCCC, the Government of Egypt, the Mission of Switzerland to the UN, and the Mission of Austria to the UN.
